How to Choose Pet Food Can Filling, Capping and Labeling Packaging? Start With Can Type, Contents and Sealing Requirements

Pet food can packaging is not only about the filling machine. First confirm whether the product is wet food or dry food, the can type, can-mouth structure, whether aluminum foil sealing is needed, cap type, and label position; then decide the filling, sealing, lidding or capping, and labeling route.

Real customer problem

I produce pet food, including wet food and dry food. I want to use metal cans or plastic jars and need filling, sealing, lidding, and labeling, but I do not know where to start selecting equipment.

First determine the packaging route

Pet food can packaging is not only about the filling machine. First confirm whether the product is wet food or dry food, the can type, can-mouth structure, whether aluminum foil sealing is needed, cap type, and label position; then decide the filling, sealing, lidding or capping, and labeling route.

Metal Can Filling and Seaming Route

Suitable for: wet pet food, meat paste, gravy, and other products with good flowability, packed in metal cans such as three-piece or two-piece cans and requiring seam sealing. Advantages: metal cans can provide strong sealing after sample confirmation, suitable for long shelf life and high-temperature sterilization; after seaming, the lid is secure and transport deformation is less likely. Limitations: can diameter, can height, lid size, and seaming roll matching must be confirmed; during filling, check whether the product contains large particles or bones to avoid blocking the filling valve. Not recommended when: plastic jars or paper cans are used, or seam sealing is not required. Equipment direction: servo piston filling machine or sauce piston filling machine for quantitative filling, followed by a can seamer, with labeling or coding equipment added as needed.

Plastic Can Filling and Capping Route

Suitable for: dry pet food, freeze-dried pet food, snacks, and other granular or powder products packed in plastic wide-mouth jars and requiring screw capping. Advantages: plastic jars have lower cost, are easy to open and close, and are suitable for repeated use after opening; an aluminum foil liner can be added to improve moisture resistance. Limitations: jar-mouth thread, cap size, and torque requirement must be confirmed; granule filling requires attention to weighing accuracy and dust, and the jar mouth may need cleaning before capping. Not recommended when: the product requires high-temperature sterilization or long-term vacuum storage, where plastic jars may be less suitable than metal cans. Equipment direction: powder or granule filling machine, or paste filling machine when needed, followed by an automatic capping machine and a round or square bottle labeling machine.

Aluminum Foil Heat Sealing and Cap Pressing Route

Suitable for: wet food and semi-fluid pet food in plastic jars or paper cans, where aluminum foil film is heat sealed first and an outer lid is pressed on later for double sealing. Advantages: aluminum foil film heat sealing provides good leak prevention, and the outer lid adds protection; suitable for chilled products or short shelf-life ambient products, and the lid can be closed again after opening. Limitations: jar-mouth flatness, film heat-seal performance, and lid structure must be confirmed; heat-sealing temperature and pressure should be determined by sample testing. Not recommended when: only single-layer sealing is needed or metal cans are used. Equipment direction: rotor-pump sauce filling machine or servo piston filling machine, followed by a large-diameter pail heat-press sealer for aluminum foil film heat sealing, and then an automatic capping or press-lidding machine fo...

Sample details

01Preparation material 1

The lid structure determines the capping method (press, screw, or place) and whether inline integration is needed.

Please provide photos of empty cans and filled cans, as well as can diameter, can height, and can-mouth size. These affect filling nozzle, sealing head, and capping head selection.
02Preparation material 2

The state of the contents affects the filling method, contact materials, anti-drip, and safety configuration.

Please specify whether the pet food is wet food, dry food, or semi-dry food, and whether it contains particles or bones. This determines the filling pump and valve structure.
03Preparation material 3

The lid structure determines the capping method (press, screw, or place) and whether inline integration is needed.

Please provide lid samples or dimension drawings, including screw caps, press-on lids, or aluminum foil film. These affect tooling for the capping machine and sealing machine.
04Preparation material 4

Capacity target determines single machine, semi-automatic, or continuous inline configuration, and also affects the quotation range.

Please tell us the target output, such as cans per hour, and whether inline production is required. This determines whether a standalone machine or integrated line is more suitable.
05Preparation material 5

Photos and dimensions can first determine container positioning, mold direction, and whether sample testing is needed.

If information is incomplete, you can first send available photos and approximate dimensions. We will judge the route first, then provide a detailed supplement list.

Common selection mistakes

01Only asking about the filling machine while ignoring sealing and lidding
02Assuming metal cans and plastic jars use the same equipment
03Ignoring can-mouth cleaning and anti-drip control
04Requesting a quote without lid samples
05Confusing standalone machines with inline systems

Common questions

01How much does a pet food filling line cost?

The price depends on can type, product characteristics, output, and automation level. It should be confirmed from samples and parameters, and there is no fixed price range. Send can and product information first so we can prepare an initial route.

02Can my target of 30 cans per minute be achieved?

It can be evaluated. We need to confirm can diameter, filling volume, and downstream processes; multi-head filling and high-speed capping routes are available.

03Can you quote first if I do not have samples?

A preliminary judgment can be made from can diameter, can height, and product description, but a formal quote requires sample testing to confirm filling consistency and sealing effect.

04Which is better for leak prevention, aluminum foil sealing or screw capping?

Aluminum foil heat sealing gives better sealing performance and is suitable for longer storage. Screw caps are convenient for repeated use after opening. Many projects use both together.

05Can one labeling machine handle both metal cans and plastic jars?

Yes, but the can shape and surface material are different, so labeling parameters must be adjusted. Can samples are recommended for testing.

06If I need line production, can the configuration be confirmed in stages?

Yes, but site space, upstream and downstream takt, and conveyor method should be confirmed first. It is better to plan standalone machines first, then connect them step by step.
