Customer's real question

We make sandwiches and want box or tray packaging with sealing and labeling, but don't know what equipment to choose. Can you give us some direction?

First determine the packaging route

For sandwich packaging, first confirm refrigeration conditions, shelf life, display method, and output volume, then decide on tray sealing, MAP, labeling, or downstream coding.

Ordinary heat sealing route

Suitable for: sandwiches sold the same day or short-distance distribution, using PP or PET trays with roll film or pre-cut film heat sealing, no extended shelf life needed. Advantages: relatively low equipment cost, simple operation, fast changeover, suitable for small to medium batch production. Limitations: sealing quality depends on tray rim flatness and film matching; need to confirm rim dimensions and film heat-seal performance. Not recommended: if sandwiches need refrigeration over 3 days or export transport, ordinary heat sealing may not meet moisture and freshness requirements. Equipment direction: we can provide desktop multi-compartment tray sealers or pre-formed tray sealers, with roll film or pre-cut film, custom tooling per tray shape.

MAP fresh-keeping sealing route (MAP)

Suitable for: sandwiches needing extended shelf life, refrigerated distribution, or good display effect. Vacuum and nitrogen or mixed gas flushing inhibit bacterial growth. Advantages: significantly extends shelf life, maintains sandwich appearance and texture, suitable for supermarkets and chain distribution. Limitations: need to confirm tray airtightness, film barrier properties, and gas mix ratio; equipment investment and consumable costs are higher than ordinary heat sealing. Not recommended: if sandwiches are sold the same day without refrigeration, MAP may add unnecessary cost. Equipment direction: we can provide tray MAP sealers supporting vacuum and gas flushing, custom tooling per tray size.

Labeling and coding downstream route

Suitable for: sandwich projects needing labels (brand, ingredients, barcode) or date/batch coding after sealing. Advantages: flexible configuration, can be used standalone or inline; label and coding content can be adjusted anytime. Limitations: need to confirm label material, labeling position, coding content, and conveying speed; label adhesion to film needs testing. Not recommended: if sandwich packaging already has printed complete information and no traceability requirement, downstream identification can be omitted. Equipment direction: we can provide round/square bottle labelers and date/batch inkjet coders that can be integrated into the post-sealing conveyor.

Recommended equipment route: Container and film confirmation

First provide tray samples and film material; we will customize the sealing die according to the tray rim dimensions and test the sealing effect.

Recommended equipment route: Sealing equipment selection

Choose ordinary heat sealing or MAP sealing based on preservation goal and capacity. Desktop models are suitable for sampling and small batches; rotary or inline models are for continuous production.

Recommended equipment route: Downstream labeling or coding

After sealing, add labels or print dates. Can be standalone or inline, configured according to label position and content.

Sample details

01Prepare information 1

Photos and dimensions can initially determine container positioning, tooling direction, and whether sample testing is needed.

Please provide sandwich tray samples or photos, length/width/height dimensions, and rim shape. We will determine the tooling solution accordingly.
02Prepare information 2

Film material and liner affect sealing temperature, pressure, dwell time, and feeding method.

Please inform the sealing film material (e.g., aluminum foil film, easy-peel film) and thickness, or send film samples for sealing parameter testing.
03Prepare information 3

Capacity target determines standalone, semi-automatic, or continuous inline configuration, and also affects the quotation range.

What is the target capacity in trays per hour? Is it currently manual or do you have upstream equipment? This affects choosing a standalone machine or inline system.
04Prepare information 4

Even if information is incomplete, you can submit first. We will first determine the packaging direction and then list items that need to be confirmed.

Do you need extended shelf life or MAP preservation? If yes, please inform the expected shelf life and distribution conditions.
05Prepare information 5

Photos and dimensions can initially determine container positioning, tooling direction, and whether sample testing is needed.

It's okay if information is incomplete; send existing photos and dimensions first. We will initially determine the route and then supplement details.

Common selection mistakes

01Only asking for machine model without specifying tray type

Sandwich trays come in single-compartment, multi-compartment, and irregular shapes. Different tray shapes require custom tooling; matching by machine name alone is not possible.

02Ignoring film material testing

Sealing quality is closely related to the film's heat-seal layer, thickness, and tray material. Mass production without testing may lead to seal leaks.

03Treating MAP as a universal solution

MAP requires tray airtightness and film barrier properties. Not all sandwiches are suitable, and the cost is higher.

04Labeling position and label material not confirmed in advance

Labels applied on the film or tray side have different materials and adhesion, which may affect labeling speed and firmness.

05Ignoring downstream conveying and inline space

Inline connection of sealer, labeler, and coder requires reserved conveying height and turning space; site layout should be planned in advance.

Common questions

01How much does a sandwich packaging machine cost?

The price depends on the sealing method, capacity, and whether it is inline. A common desktop heat sealer differs greatly from a MAP inline system. It is recommended to provide samples and capacity requirements for a targeted quotation.

02What equipment can be used for small-batch sandwiches?

A desktop multi-compartment tray sealer is suitable for sampling and small batches, with manual tray placement and automatic sealing, and flexible changeover.

03Does sandwich packaging require labeling after sealing?

If brand, ingredient, or barcode information is needed, a labeling machine or inkjet coder can be added after sealing, or pre-printed film can be used.

04What film material is used for sandwich packaging?

Commonly used aluminum foil seal or easy-peel film must match the tray material. It is recommended to send film samples for sealing temperature and time testing.

05What to do if sandwich seals leak easily?

Check the flatness of the tray rim, the heat-seal layer of the film, and the sealing temperature. Adjust the die sealing width if necessary.

06Does sandwich packaging need to be inline?

If there is automatic tray loading upstream, the downstream can be inline with sealing, labeling, and coding, but a single machine is more flexible for small batches.
