How to Choose Sealing and Cap Pressing for Pet Food Cans? Start With Can Mouth and Cap

Pet canned food packaging should not be selected by sealing machine name alone. First confirm can-mouth diameter, can body material, sealing film type, lid structure such as easy-open lid or press-on lid, and target output, then decide between heat-press sealing, induction sealing, or a sealing and capping line.

Start From Samples and Target Output

I want to package pet food cans and need sealing and cap pressing. What equipment should I choose?

First determine the packaging route

Pet canned food packaging should not be selected by sealing machine name alone. First confirm can-mouth diameter, can body material, sealing film type, lid structure such as easy-open lid or press-on lid, and target output, then decide between heat-press sealing, induction sealing, or a sealing and capping line.

Heat-Press Aluminum Foil Sealing + Cap Pressing Route

Suitable for: wide-mouth containers such as paper cans, plastic pails, and composite cans, first seal with aluminum foil film then press on outer cap. Advantages: sealing and capping completed on one machine, reducing process transfer. Limitations: requires smooth container rim, film and container material compatibility; sealing parameters need sample testing. Not recommended: when the container rim is metal and requires double seaming, consider a can seamer route. Equipment direction: paper can/plastic pail aluminum foil sealing and capping machine.

Metal can double seam route

Suitable for: metal cans such as tinplate cans and aluminum cans, using seaming rolls to roll the lid onto the can body. Advantages: high sealing strength, suitable for long-term storage and high-temperature sterilization. Limitations: strict dimensional tolerances for lid and can body; changeover requires replacing seaming rolls and can support. Not recommended: for plastic or paper containers, seaming is not applicable; consider heat sealing route instead. Equipment direction: can seamer.

Induction foil sealing + screw capping route

Suitable for: Plastic bottles, wide-mouth jars with threaded caps; aluminum foil liner inside cap seals via induction heating. Advantages: Non-contact sealing; foil provides leak and tamper resistance. Limitations: Cap must have aluminum foil liner; container material must be plastic; metal cans not suitable. Not recommended: For metal or paper containers, induction cannot penetrate; consider heat sealing or double seaming. Equipment direction: Water-cooled induction aluminum foil sealer or benchtop air-cooled induction aluminum foil sealer.

Recommended equipment route: Sample and container confirmation

Use physical samples to confirm can-mouth diameter, film compatibility, and lid structure, avoiding equipment-configuration errors.

Recommended equipment route: hot-press foil film sealing and press capping

Can complete film sealing and capping together, suitable for paper-can and plastic-pail pet food packaging.

Recommended Equipment Route: Downstream Inspection and Marking

Checkweighing can confirm whether filling weight meets the target, and coding supports production-date and batch traceability.

Route comparison

01Heat-Press Aluminum Foil Sealing + Cap Pressing Route
  • Suitable for paper cans, plastic buckets, composite cans, and other wide-mouth containers: seal foil film first, then press the outer cap.
  • Sealing and cap pressing are completed on one machine, reducing process transfer.
  • A flat can rim and matching film / rim material are required; sealing parameters should be tested with samples.
  • If the can mouth is metal and requires double seaming, a can seaming route is recommended instead.
  • Paper can/plastic pail aluminum foil sealing and press capping machine
02Metal can double seam route
  • Suitable for tinplate cans, aluminum cans, and other metal cans, using seaming rollers to seam lid and can body.
  • high sealing strength, suitable for long-term storage and high-temperature sterilization
  • Can lid and can body dimensional tolerance must be tight, and changeover requires replacing seaming rollers and can lifter plates.
  • For plastic or paper containers, seaming is not applicable; a heat-sealing route is recommended.
  • Can seamer
03Induction foil sealing + screw capping route
  • Suitable for plastic bottles or wide-mouth jars with threaded caps, where the cap's foil liner is sealed by induction heating.
  • Non-contact sealing; the aluminum foil inside the cap provides leakage prevention and tamper evidence after sealing.
  • The cap must contain an aluminum foil liner and the container must be plastic; metal cans are not suitable.
  • If the container is a metal can or paper can, induction cannot penetrate effectively. Use heat sealing or seaming instead.
  • Water-cooled induction aluminum foil sealing machine or desktop air-cooled induction aluminum foil sealing machine

Sample details

01Preparation material 1

Photos and dimensions can first determine container positioning, mold direction, and whether sample testing is needed.

Please provide empty can samples or photos, can-mouth diameter, and can height to confirm tooling and sealing-head design.
02Preparation material 2

Film material and liner affect sealing temperature, pressure, dwell time, and feeding method.

Sealing film samples or specifications, including material, thickness, and peelability, are used for sealing-parameter testing.
03Preparation material 3

The lid structure determines the capping method (press, screw, or place) and whether inline integration is needed.

Cap samples, such as easy-open lids, press-on lids, or screw caps, help confirm cap structure and whether cap feeding is needed.
04Preparation material 4

Capacity target determines single machine, semi-automatic, or continuous inline configuration, and also affects the quotation range.

Tell us the target output, such as cans per hour, because it affects standalone or line configuration.
05Preparation material 5

The state of the contents affects the filling method, contact materials, anti-drip, and safety configuration.

Describe the product condition, such as oiliness or particles, so mouth-contamination risk and filling method can be evaluated.

Common selection mistakes

01Can-Mouth Flatness Should Be Confirmed First
02Film Material and Sealing Parameters Need Joint Testing
03Cap Structure Samples Should Be Sent in Advance
04Confirm Output and Line Rhythm
05Reserve Interfaces for Downstream Inspection and Marking

Common questions

01Can we determine the direction without complete information?

Yes. First send can sample photos, approximate dimensions, and target capacity. We will determine the route and then list what additional sample items are needed.

02What information needs to be prepared before a quotation?

Need can sample, film sample, cap sample, target output, and product condition. Incomplete information is also acceptable; send what you have, and we will guide you on what to supplement.

03How does capacity affect the configuration?

Production target changes the number of stations and line integration. Small batches can use standalone machines; continuous production requires evaluation of automatic can feeding, line integration, and downstream inspection.

04Why test consumables or film materials?

Different film materials have different sealing temperatures, pressures, and sealing effects. Sample testing is needed to determine suitable parameters and mold matching.

05How to confirm sealing or closure effectiveness?

Sealing effectiveness must be confirmed through testing with samples, packaging materials, and parameters. It is recommended to provide can and film samples for sealing testing, checking seal strength and easy-peel properties.

06How to determine whether a linked line is needed?

If there is filling upstream and checkweighing or coding downstream with high capacity, it is recommended to evaluate line integration. You can plan with standalone machines first and reserve integration interfaces.
