How to Choose Heat-Press Sealing for Cups, Bowls, Boxes and Trays? Start With Container, Film Material and Output

For cup, bowl, box, and tray heat-press sealing, first check the rim, film type, and output. Roll film fits regular rims and continuous production, while pre-cut film fits irregular lunch boxes and small-batch sampling. Sending sample photos, dimensions, and target output helps us match equipment quickly.

  • First confirm the container rim shape, film type, and daily output, then decide whether to use automatic roll-film feeding or manually placed pre-cut film. Both routes have suitable use cases.
  • Cup, Bowl, Box and Tray Heat-Press Sealing, Roll Film and Pre-Cut Film Selection

Start With the Current Production Conditions

I need to seal yogurt cups and meal boxes, but I do not know whether to use roll film or pre-cut film. What is the difference between the two machine routes?

First determine the packaging route

First confirm the container rim shape, film type, and daily output, then decide whether to use automatic roll-film feeding or manually placed pre-cut film. Both routes have suitable use cases.

Automatic Roll-Film Feeding Route

Suitable for projects with higher daily output, regular container rim shapes such as round or square, and a need to reduce manual film placement. Advantage: the machine automatically feeds film, seals, and cuts the film. The operator only needs to place containers, so efficiency is higher. Limit: film roll width, roll diameter, and film heat-seal performance must be confirmed, and the container rim must suit roll-film coverage. Not recommended when the container rim is irregular or has multi-compartment ribs; roll film may not fully fit, so pre-cut film should be evaluated first. Equipment direction: small cup filling and sealing machine, desktop roll-film tray sealer, and rotary multi-station sealer all support automatic roll-film feeding.

Manual Pre-Cut Film Placement Route

Suitable for small-batch production with many varieties, irregular containers, multi-compartment meal boxes, and sample testing stages. Advantage: pre-cut film can be customized to the container opening shape, and changeover only requires changing film pieces without adjusting a film-feeding mechanism. Limit: the operator must place pre-cut film onto the container mouth manually, so speed depends on manual operation and daily output is lower. Not recommended when daily output exceeds 2000 boxes and the container rim is regular, because roll film is more efficient. Equipment direction: desktop multi-compartment lunch box sealer and premade box tray sealer can use pre-cut film, with tooling customized by container opening size.

MAP Sealing Route (Roll Film or Pre-cut Film Both Supported)

Suitable for trays, meal boxes, and salad boxes that need shelf-life targets, vacuum, or nitrogen flushing. Advantage: MAP sealing replaces the air inside the tray and can significantly extend shelf life for fresh food, cooked meals, and prepared dishes. Limit: film gas-barrier performance must be confirmed, and the MAP module increases equipment cost and maintenance requirements. Not recommended when the product is sold the same day or does not need shelf-life extension; normal heat sealing is enough. Equipment direction: tray MAP sealing machine supports roll film and pre-cut film and can be configured with a MAP module according to shelf-life needs.

Recommended equipment route: confirm container and film

Tooling and sealing parameters need to be customized according to the container rim size, shape, and the film heat-seal layer.

Recommended Equipment Route: Choose the Main Sealing Machine

Select roll-film or pre-cut-film equipment according to container type and daily output. Cups and regular box shapes usually favor roll film; irregular boxes usually favor pre-cut film.

Recommended equipment route: tooling and change parts

Each container needs dedicated tooling. For multiple specifications, change parts should be prepared in advance.

Recommended Equipment Route: Downstream Assistance

After sealing, date or batch coding and labeling are often needed and can be connected when required.

Route comparison

01Automatic Roll-Film Feeding Route
  • Suitable for projects with higher daily output, regular container rim shapes such as round or square, and a need to reduce manual film placement.
  • The machine automatically feeds film, seals, and cuts the film. The operator only needs to place containers, so efficiency is higher.
  • Film roll width, roll diameter, and film heat-seal performance must be confirmed, and the container rim must suit roll-film coverage.
  • If the container rim is irregular or has multi-compartment ribs, roll film may not fully fit. Pre-cut film should be evaluated first.
  • Our small cup filling and sealing machine, desktop roll-film tray sealer, and rotary multi-station sealer all support automatic roll-film feeding.
02Manual Pre-Cut Film Placement Route
  • Suitable for small-batch production with many varieties, irregular containers, multi-compartment meal boxes, and sample testing stages.
  • Pre-cut film can be customized to the container opening shape. During changeover, only the film pieces need to be changed, without adjusting a film-feeding mechanism.
  • The operator must place the pre-cut film onto the container mouth manually, so speed depends on manual operation and daily output is lower.
  • If daily output exceeds 2000 boxes and the container rim is regular, the roll-film route is more efficient and long-term use of pre-cut film is not recommended.
  • Our desktop multi-compartment lunch box sealer and premade box tray sealer can use pre-cut film, with tooling customized according to the container opening size.
03MAP Sealing Route (Roll Film or Pre-cut Film Both Supported)
  • Suitable for trays, meal boxes, and salad boxes that need shelf-life targets, vacuum, or nitrogen flushing.
  • MAP sealing replaces the air inside the tray and can significantly extend shelf life for fresh food, cooked meals, and prepared dishes.
  • Film gas-barrier performance must be confirmed, and the MAP module increases equipment cost and maintenance requirements.
  • If the product is sold the same day or does not require shelf-life extension, normal heat sealing is enough and MAP investment is unnecessary.
  • Our tray MAP sealing machine supports roll film and pre-cut film and can be configured with a MAP module according to shelf-life needs.

Sample details

01Preparation material 1

Photos and dimensions can first determine container positioning, mold direction, and whether sample testing is needed.

Physical container or photos: used to evaluate rim shape, dimensions, and whether tooling needs to be made.
02Preparation material 2

Film material and liner affect sealing temperature, pressure, dwell time, and feeding method.

Sealing film sample or specification: confirm film structure, thickness, and heat-seal layer because these affect sealing parameters.
03Preparation material 3

Capacity target determines single machine, semi-automatic, or continuous inline configuration, and also affects the quotation range.

Daily output or target speed: this decides whether to choose an automatic roll-film line or a semi-automatic pre-cut film route.
04Preparation material 4

Incomplete information can still be submitted; we will first determine the packaging direction and then list items that need to be confirmed.

Whether filling equipment already exists or an integrated machine is needed: this affects whether the equipment should be a stand-alone sealer or a filling and sealing machine.
05Preparation material 5

Photos and dimensions can first determine container positioning, mold direction, and whether sample testing is needed.

If the information is not complete yet, you can first send container photos and approximate output. We will judge the route first and then give you a confirmation checklist.

Common selection mistakes

01Asking Only for Machine Name, Not Film Material
02Ignoring the container rim shape
03Assuming One Machine Can Handle All Cup Types
04Not confirming film stock and procurement lead time
05Confusing a stand-alone sealer with a filling and sealing integrated machine

Common questions

01Which is more economical, roll film or pre-cut film?

Roll-film equipment has a slightly higher initial investment but lower long-term film cost. Pre-cut-film equipment is cheaper, but the film unit cost is higher, so it suits small batches. The better choice depends on daily output and film purchasing volume.

02My meal box has multiple compartments. Can it use roll film?

Multi-compartment meal boxes have many ribs, and roll film may not fully fit the sealing surface. Pre-cut film or custom tooling should be tested first. We can test based on your box sample.

03If I seal 1000 boxes per day, which route should I choose?

1000 boxes per day is a medium output. If the container is regular, semi-automatic roll-film sealing or a small cup machine can work. If it is an irregular box, semi-automatic pre-cut film sealing is safer.

04Should I buy sealing film myself or can you supply it?

We can provide film samples for testing and can also recommend suppliers. Bulk film is usually purchased by the customer, and we will provide specification guidance.

05What should I do if air leaks after sealing?

Air leakage is usually related to the film heat-seal layer, sealing temperature, pressure, or rim contamination. We recommend sending samples so we can adjust parameters or tooling.

06Can the equipment be upgraded to an automatic line if output increases later?

Yes. You can start with a stand-alone or semi-automatic machine and reserve a conveyor interface. Later, automatic cup loading, filling, tray arranging, and line integration can be added.
